Getting Started
Starting a flower garden isn’t as difficult as it might seem, especially if you have experience with houseplants or vegetable gardens. Just like them, your flowers will need a lot of sunshine, regular water, and some weeding until they get started. Even then, there are shortcuts you can take to help you with those tasks, such as using irrigation and mulch (but we’ll get to that later).

Common Question About Growing Flowers
Do I need a lot of space to grow my own flowers?
Nope! Even a small collection of pots means you can grow enough flowers to gather a fresh bouquet every week. A small raised bed is a fantastic option, too, and it’s easy to manage.
Do I need a fancy grow light set up to get started?
Also no! Although starting seeds indoors can extend your growing season and make some planning stages easier, it’s totally not required. The beginner kits, in particular, only include flowers that are easy to grow from seeds planted directly in the garden, such as sunflowers and zinnias.
I’ve never grown flowers, only vegetables. Where do I start?
That’s a fantastic starting point! If you’ve grown veggies, you can grow flowers. The basic requirements of sunlight, water, and soil fertility are the same. You can even mix vegetables and flowers together, which is my favorite way to grow them.
How do I know if I have the right soil to start a garden?
Does your yard have any weeds growing in it? If so, your soil is probably just fine for supporting a garden. Granted, weeds are tough plants that don’t need attention, but they do show that your soil has enough fertility and moisture to at least get started. A soil test is a great idea, and I have many articles on this site about preparing your garden soil for planting.
